9 sugar-free treats for diabetics

People who suffer from diabetes mellitus need to pay special attention to what they eat in everyday life. Because a piece of cream pie in the afternoon or an ice cream on the way can quickly throw the blood sugar level off track. Contrary to the prevailing opinion, diabetics do not have to do without sugar. However, they should consume heavily sugary foods such as cakes or chocolates only in moderation, as these "simple" carbohydrates can promote heavy blood sugar fluctuations. Nevertheless, the enjoyment must not be neglected: We have put together for you nine sugar-free treats, which allow diabetics to access without a guilty conscience.

1. raspberries, blueberries and co

Various types of fruit cause the blood sugar levels to increase to different degrees. Berries are beneficial for diabetics because they only have a low glycemic load. This means that berries have only a few carbohydrates in total, which also only slightly raise the blood sugar level.

2. Whole grain crackers provide fiber

Whole grains contain a lot of fiber, which has a positive effect on blood sugar levels and blood lipids. Therefore, diabetics should pay special attention to a sufficient fiber intake. In addition, carbohydrates from whole grains increase the blood sugar level only slowly. Whole grain crackers are therefore a suitable snack to quench the nibbling cravings in front of the TV.

3. Chips from the oven

Another way to have a snack is simply to make potato chips yourself: slice the peeled potatoes into thin slices, place them on a baking sheet and sprinkle them with a little olive oil. Season to taste with pepper, salt, curry or paprika and leave to dry at 100 degrees in the oven until the crisps are crispy.

4. Chocolate spread instead of nut nougat cream

Mix a packet of cream cheese with one to two tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder and season with a few drops of liquid sweetener or stevia - finished with a sugar-free alternative to honey and jam. Tip: Instead of double-cream cheese, use the mid-fat level to save calories.

Finished fruit yogurts and quark desserts from the supermarket often contain a lot of sugar. Better is the homemade version: stir a packet of natural quark creamy with a dash of sparkling water, refine with a pinch of cinnamon and sweeten with sweetener at will. 6. Ice-cold enjoyment

Home-made ice cream made from frozen yogurt and pureed fruits can also be enjoyed by diabetics. Puree the fruits of your choice, mix with whole milk yoghurt and season with sweetener. Freeze the ice for at least three hours in the freezer and stir about every 30 minutes to make it creamy. A crunchy topping is chopped nuts or roasted oatmeal.

Drinking water is going to be dull in the long run? How about a homemade mint iced tea? Pour fresh mint and a few slices of ginger over with boiling water, allow to cool and add a dash of lime juice. Put the ice tea in the fridge for some time, enjoy sweet and ice-cold at will.

8. Chai tea instead of hot chocolate

Chai tea is an Indian spice tea based on black tea. Dusted with a little milk froth and cinnamon, it satisfies the desire for a warm, sweet drink without raising blood sugar levels. However, be careful not to use instant powders or ready made mixes - they often contain lots of sugar.

9. Toast with cider

Alcoholic beverages are often high in sugar and provide many calories - and alcohol can increase the risk of hypoglycaemia in diabetics treated with insulin. A possible alternative is cider: it contains fewer carbohydrates compared to other alcoholic drinks and also low in alcohol, so it is moderately suitable for diabetics. However, to avoid low blood sugar you should eat a carbohydrate-rich meal, such as a hearty wholegrain sandwich.

Compensate for sins through sport

If you hit the strings once and have consumed too many sugary treats, you can offset your sins to a degree with sports. Because with physical exertion the muscles need more energy, whereby the blood sugar level sinks.
